Even Rocket Science isn't rocket science...

This page was last updated in 2002, but some of the links are still of interest. We are planning to implement a better resource in the future -- TJH (2006-5/10)

These are projects I have found on robotics that may be related to the Crew Spider project. Most of these are from Source Forge. I am continuing to look for other robotics resources that are related. See also the links and portal pages linked at the bottom:

Open Automaton Project
"The purpose of this project is to engineer modular software and electronic components, from which it is possible to assemble an intelligent PC-based mobile robot for the home or office." Interested in open, modular robotic design. No extant examples, though. Last modified 2001-2. Home page is not too bad, but very early development. Most sub-pages are incomplete. There is a decent Links page. Contact: Dafydd Walters or SF Mailing List.
Robotic Software
"This project aims at developing a robust yet practical multiprocess robotic "nervous system" that will allow a four-legged robot to control itself autonomously in nine degrees of freedom." Nicely specific goal. This is a student project from "Ecole Polytechnique Montreal". There are some 10 developers. Nice Home page, and they do have hardware. Contact: SAE Robot.

We are seeking help with our first project, a mobile-robot simulator featuring a 2-D virtual world, and new work including artificial intelligence and robot-control logic." Fairly well-developed home page, software releases, etc. Also intends to act as a forum for general software sharing on robotics. Seems to focus on mouse robots. Contact: G.W. Lucas.
OROCOS: Open Robotic Control Software

A framework and development project for important components of robotic software. This appears to be a "toolbox" approach in which useful components are developed and collected for the use of developers on specific projects. Appears to be fairly immature (only started in 2001), but is progressingly fairly quickly and has university and government backing (in the EU). Interesting keywords: XML, Python, GPL/LGPL, DocBook. The Home page is an excellent resource already. Contacts: Mailing List, Peter Soetens. Also has a nice Links Page.

From the site:

``Orocos focuses on three complementary issues:

Other projects will have to complement Orocos, to fill in the higher levels of robot control. ''

Modular Controller Architecture
"A modular, network transparent and realtime capable C/C++ framework for controlling robots and other kind of hardware. The main plattform is Linux/RTLinux, support for Win32 and Solaris also exists." Software release exists. Impressive 3D robotic simulation framework provided. Might be a good basis for CS2. Worthy of study. Appears to be a collaboration between multiple university-level projects in German. Home page provides an API documentation browser. Contact:Kay-Ulrich Scholl or Mailing List. Our mission at Anansi Spaceworks is to provide the training and resources that will be needed for a Free future in Space. For us, that future isn't about governments or stocks, but about people. There are thousands of problems that need solving to make way for space colonization, and there's no one better suited or motivated to solve them than the people who want to go. Our job is to make that as easy as it can be!
